ART - Slab Clay Mugs

Classtime: 5-7 days

Learning Statement Paragraph:  The student will learn how to work with the molding and joining properties of clay to hand build a mug that has expressive qualities.

Context:

 

Materials: Clay, slip, modeling tools

 

Procedures: 

Step 1 - Show students the pottery room, explain what it is used for, layout, rules and expectations

Step 2 - Show finished examples of pottery focus on Slab Constructed Mugs

Step 3 - Model for students how to make the mug

Step 4 - Students begin their project while the instructor walks arond fielding inquires and providing guidance.

The student will:

  1. DIscuss clay properties  
  2. Partake in class discussions
  3. Watch demonstration on joining slabs to form a mug
  4. Overlap and smooth the slabs to join as the bowl is formed
  5. Consider options of jagged edges versus smooth edges to create expressive qualities
  6. Create designs during the various stages of the clay drying process (Choice of Additive and Subtractive Designs)
  7. Optional - Glaze the bisque fired bowl ($1.00 per pound)
  8. Written critique of piece
  9. Show evidence of craftsmanship

  4. Creativity
  5. Following Directions

 

Evaluation: The above categories will each be worth 10 points, totaling 100 points for the project
