Learning Statement Paragraph: The student will learn how to work with the molding and joining properties of clay to hand build a mug that has expressive qualities.

Procedures:
Step 1 - Show students the pottery room, explain what it is used for, layout, rules and expectations
Step 2 - Show finished examples of pottery focus on Slab Constructed Mugs
Step 3 - Model for students how to make the mug
Step 4 - Students begin their project while the instructor walks arond fielding inquires and providing guidance.

The student will:
- DIscuss clay properties
- Partake in class discussions
- Watch demonstration on joining slabs to form a mug
- Overlap and smooth the slabs to join as the bowl is formed
- Consider options of jagged edges versus smooth edges to create expressive qualities
- Create designs during the various stages of the clay drying process (Choice of Additive and Subtractive Designs)
- Optional - Glaze the bisque fired bowl ($1.00 per pound)
- Written critique of piece
- Show evidence of craftsmanship

Evaluation: The above categories will each be worth 10 points, totaling 100 points for the project
