Students go directly to their workstations and login.  Have them go into the Student Programs folder and double click on the KidPix icon to open the program.  Take control of their screen at this time by using LanSchool (students prefer this method) or if using a projector have them turn off their monitor.  (Remind them what the monitor is so they don't turn off the CPU and shutdown the computer.)

Use LanSchool to show the teacher's workstation to the student's workstation.

Fall Picture

Begin the lesson by demonstrating a picture for the students.  Using Draw, click on black for the color, draw a picture (i.e. a house with a door and window sitting on a line).  Remind students that in a picture the lines must touch or when you fill it, it will leak.  Draw a cloud in the sky and don't close it.  Click on the Fill Bucket.  Fill the cloud with a design and see how it leaks into the sky area.  Do the Undo Guy immediately as he will only go back one step.  Close the opening by going back into Draw. Click on the Fill Bucket again and fill the cloud.  Fill in the different sections of the house with designs, changing colors if needed, and fill in grass below the line and sky above from the design bucket.  Caution students to fill in the large areas last because fill won't fill over another design.  It will just fill in small spaces between the design.

Now ask the students what time of year it is. (Fall)  Explain to the students that they are going to begin to draw a Fall picture.  Brainstorm what their picture could be.  Some suggestions for pictures might include doing things with leaves, Halloween, animals getting ready for winter, football, soccer, or just a Fall scene.  If they have been on any field trips bring that into the discussion.

Demonstrate for students a quick Fall picture.  Draw a pumpkin with an unfilled oval.  Draw eyes and mouth with the line and swiggly tool.  Use a pattern to fill it.  Draw a line for the ground and fill it with the grass from the design bucket and a sky or dark night for the rest of the background.  If you have drawn a few pictures ahead of time and saved them, quickly show them to the students now.

Release the students and have them start their pictures.  Tell them that they are probably not going to finish their pictures today but they will the next time they come to computers.  Remind students that they can use all the tools they have learned thus far - Draw, Paint, and Fill to create their picture.  Roam the room and monitor their pictures.  You may need to make suggestions to add other objects to their pictures.

About fifteen minutes before the end of class have the students stop working and teach them how to save their picture to the network.

Saving a File

This is the first time the students will be saving their work in the Network.  Take the time to explain the system to them.  A suggested dialogue follows.

Each one of them logged in using their username.  This let the computer know who was working at that computer workstation.  Do you know what a file folder is?  Well, each one of you probably has some type of a file folder in the classroom.  It may be a writing folder or a folder the teacher has in a file cabinet.  When you login to the network, the computer goes to your file folder and has your saved work available for you to use over and over.  But there is a special way on the computer to put your work into your file.  We are going to do that now.

(Demonstrating with a projector makes this task much easier.)  Look at the top of the screen.  Do you see the gray bar with the words on it?  The first word is File.  Click on it.  A menu pops down.  Just like in a restaurant there are choices on the menu.  We want to drag our mouse down to the choice that says, "Save As" and click one time on it.  It is after the word New and Open.

A window pops up with a blue bar on the top.  (From the teacher’s workstation, you should be able to see each student’s monitor to see if the students are following along.)  It is important always to read the information on that blue bar because it helps us to know what we chose.  It says, "Save Picture As".  Underneath that it says, "Save In" and there is a long white box next to it.  Point to it.  (Check that the students are following along.)  The program wants to save it in a file called "My Pictures".  Is that your name? (No)  We have to find your file name.  Your file name is your username.  Look at the end of the long white box.  Do you see the little arrow pointing down?  Click on it.   These are all the files in the computer.  Your username is about four or five lines down.  Click on your username.  It pops up in the white box.  This is called the F drive.  F stands for file.

Now there is a large white rectangle underneath your F:\.  It is empty.  Underneath that is another box with the words "File name".  Point to it.  Check to see that the students are in the correct place.  Right now it says KidPix 1 file.  That's not the name of our picture.  What kind of picture are we making?  (Fall)  We are going to name the file fall.  Click the cursor at the end of the words and backspace to erase them.  (Check the students)  Now type in the word "Fall". (Does not have to be capitalized)  (Check the students.)  Now click on the word "Save" at the end of that row.  You have now saved your file for next week.

Exit

Remind students to click on the word "File" at the top.  Slide down to the word "Exit" and click on it.

Have the students log off to end the session.
